CHAPTER 31
BONNIE
I visited Bonnieâs grave, as I had for the last couple of years. Each time I talked to her and cried my eyes out, emptying myself of emotion. This time as I was leaving the cemetery, I wiped away my tears and knew something had to change with my ritual visit to my sisterâs grave.
I walked and pondered until finally it occurred to me. It was bad enough she was dead and lying in the ground, but it was an open wound for me that there was still no headstone for her. I realized we were poorâthere just wasnât enough money to do right by her.
âBonnie, I swear to you,â I vowed, looking back along the walk that led to her resting place among the old sycamore trees, âI swear I will find a way ⦠Iâll find a way to get you what you deserve.â I reached down, picked a small clump of pale lavender-colored wildflowers that grew nearby, and continued to walk ahead.
Listening to the sound of my shoes on the pavement, I said aloud, âMaybe I could convince Norton that we have a simple wedding in front of the Justice of the Peace and forego the clothes, the church, and the flowers.â But I couldnât. Norton isnât and shouldnât be involved with this.
Closing that door, my thoughts turned elsewhere. Thereâs Grandpaâs money in the bank. I could just use a little of it.
âNo,â I thought. âAbsolutely not! Grandpa trusts me not to touch the money.â
I realized, though, I just canât keep coming back here and leaving Bonnieâs grave feeling sad and helpless, too. However, what I can do is wait. âIâm good at waiting. Iâll wait until things change. As Grandpa told me then, whatever is in the safe deposit box at the bank is mine.â
Walking out of the cemetery, I knew I would not be coming back again until I could provide a proper headstone for Bonnie.
âThat, my dearest sister, I promise you.â
